President Biden has told America that “democracy has prevailed” – BBC News

Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th president of the United States at a ceremony in Capitol Hill, Washington DC, where Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the site two weeks earlier. He noted that democracy prevailed when the new president pledged to defend the constitution, while urging Americans to overcome their differences in search of unity. Next to Mr. Biden was Vice President Kamala Harris, the first woman, the first black American, and the first person of South Asian descent to hold the second highest position in the nation. His notable absence was when President Donald Trump stepped down, leaving for Florida the same day, while promising his fans to “somehow come back”. Mr Biden has promised that tackling the coronavirus pandemic will be at the top of his agenda. Huw Edwards presents the BBC New report by North American editor Jon Sopel at the White House.
