The leaders of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales plan to break up the United Kingdom if Reform Britain wins the election.

With the rise of Nigel Farage, political leaders in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are faced with the possibility of the breakup of the United Kingdom, which until recently was considered highly unlikely.

Both supporters of the union and advocates of Irish unity are bracing for uncertainty about whether British reformists will make any major strides in the next general election, such as putting Mr Farage on Downing Street or establishing the party as an official opposition party.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle believe a reform-led government could pursue stricter immigration policies that would cause unrest among the nations as it rushes to call for a referendum on Irish unity.

Even the prospect of Reform leading to significant power seizures by the opposition or as part of a coalition has raised new concerns.

Former Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford has warned that the political landscape could change dramatically if reforms continue.

“You can imagine that in just a few years the people of the island of Ireland will see a country across the Irish Sea where kidnapping gangs like ICE are arresting people on the streets.”

Mr Drakeford has consistently argued for preserving the Union, but he believes British politics have undergone a fundamental change and fears there “may not be time” for a thoughtful debate about Britain’s future if reforms expand Parliament’s influence.

He continued: “The UK is a voluntary union of four countries. In any voluntary union there should be choices where people can choose to stay and people can choose to leave.”

Britain could be torn apart if Nigel Farage and Reform UK make progress at the next general election, politicians across the union have warned.

His comments came at a conference in Belfast hosted by the Social Democratic Labor Party (SDLP). At the meeting, politicians from across the UK and Ireland discussed the possibility of constitutional changes being “reverberated” by events unfolding in Westminster.

Irish Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan argued that Dublin should begin preparations for unification rather than allow British nationalism to dictate the pace of events.

“The future may not follow the predictable path of discussion and harmony,” he said.

Much of the talks focused on the financial support Northern Ireland receives from Westminster, estimated to be between £6 billion and £20 billion a year.

Several speakers suggested the issue could become a political target for reform, much in the same way that Brexit campaigners have focused on Britain’s financial contribution to the European Union.

SDLP leader Claire Hanna said: “Just wait until he sees our bills.” “I think it could become a political football, a political issue if British nationalists get deep into the resources that Northern Ireland needs.”

She argued that the lessons of Brexit showed there was a risk of engaging in constitutional debate without proper preparation.

“Brexit was a lesson in how not to change the constitution, and since then British politics have changed in structural ways. Unfortunately, we can no longer say that the Nigel Farage phenomenon is a temporary phenomenon – it is now a feature of British politics. So it is wise to think about our own constitutional future and not be a passenger in what politics wants us to do.”

Sinn Féin has long campaigned for a referendum on Irish unification, but insists any vote must be preceded by extensive planning and consultation. Under the Good Friday Agreement, the British government can hold a border poll if it believes a majority in Northern Ireland would support joining the republic.

Conor Murphy, a former Sinn Féin finance minister from Stormont who now sits in the Irish House of Lords, warned against allowing the schedule to be determined by political developments in London.

“We cannot afford to predict what will happen next in London.”

Murphy said he believed the annual financial support provided to Northern Ireland was lower than some estimates, but a larger figure could easily become a political weapon.

“He could have said, ‘We’re going to save this by sending an Irishman to wish you luck and say goodbye.’ He could do that. I’m not suggesting he would do that, but that’s kind of the nature of their policy. Sounds like Trump. “It’s unpredictable.”

Jon Burrows, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, has warned that British nationalism could strengthen support for constitutional change across Britain’s devolved states.

“It could provide more fertile ground for those who want to divide Britain.”

Instead, he argued that unionists should make a stronger case for Northern Ireland’s place within the Union by emphasizing its economic contribution and strategic importance.

“I am increasingly trying to get our message across about how Northern Ireland affects the Union.”

Prime Minister Drakeford said he still hopes the United Kingdom will continue, but warned that rising British nationalism risks alienating Scotland and Northern Ireland and politically isolating Wales.

He suggested Wales could eventually seek closer cooperation with Scotland and Ireland through a Celtic partnership modeled on the Nordic Parliament.

“You have to think and prepare in advance.”

He also warned that the reforms would not require majority public support to secure power under Britain’s electoral system.

“Distortions in the electoral system mean we can get a government with a super majority, like we have now, with 34% of the vote.

“From a Welsh perspective, this could lead to the worst of all possible outcomes – not the Welsh people choosing to leave the UK, but the UK choosing to leave Wales.”
