Jarrell Jackman: Rebuilding Santa Barbara Presidio is a local project of global significance | Homes and Lifestyle

In earlier columns, she described the 18th-century El Presidio de Santa Bárbara and the Spanish soldiers and their families who occupied it. We now begin to move towards the eventual rebuilding of the castle and the establishment of the Santa Barbara Historic Preservation Trust, the organization behind the reconstruction.

With the development of the American period in Santa Barbara after 1848, the remainder of the Presidio were used as residences, except for the original church which continued as a parish church in the city until it was destroyed by the 1857 earthquake of Fort Tejon.

A section of the Commandancia was still busy and there were a few other rooms that were, literally, in the way of the wheels of progress – that is, a grid-crossed street was laid through the brick fortress, and these streets were in fact plowed in the 1880s. , Which resulted in the demolition of some of the original milk chambers on the way.

A classic example of this destruction is taking half of a room and then closing the wall facing the street. This left half the room attached to an entire room that was eventually called Valenzuela adobe and was to be known as El Cuartel.

The oldest building in Santa Barbara and the second oldest in California, El Cuartel was one of the two remaining local buildings until the 1950s.

The 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake destroyed what was left of the Commandancia, and a row of Adobe Presidio behind El Quartel was demolished in 1937 for the parking lot of the new U.S. Post Office building at 836 Anacapa Street. A story I heard a lot is that some of the citizens welcomed this “improvement” as it was assumed that these yoghurt were the red light district of the city.

The 1925 earthquake was a defining moment for Presidio’s future. With so many state street buildings settled, city leaders decided to rebuild the city center in the Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean architectural style it is known for today.

This is a story known for scientific detail in the catalog of architectural historian David Gebhard of the 1982 exhibition he organized at the University of California, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, “Santa Barbara: Creating a New Spain in America.”

Among the leaders who participated in this architectural renaissance is the pioneering citizen of Santa Barbara, Pearl Chase, who, through the Plans and Plantation Committee, helped guide Santa Barbara through this unique city planning process. As Gebhard noted, the culmination of Santa Barbara’s return to its architectural past was the rebuilding of the Presidio, and it was Chase who led the project.

I assure that without Chase, it is likely that the project will not go anywhere; As a fan told me, it was “a force of nature.” By the 1970s, she had become a statewide national figure, awarded the honorary state park custodian by the Rangers California State Parks Association, and special recognition from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

There has been talk of preserving and rebuilding the Presidential Building over many decades in the 20th century, with panels placed on the sidewalk around various sites identifying the area as the castle’s former site. But as we got so close to establishing the Santa Barbara County Historic Fund, I don’t think there were many in the city who truly believed the presidency would be rebuilt.

There was a guy who was studying the presidency and was promoting it: Russell Antonio Ruiz. A direct descendant of various soldiers, Ruiz ‘most famous relatives were Commander Felipe Antonio de Guicoccia. He even went so far as to suggest that Pershing Park be renamed after Goicoechea, which never happened.

Ruiz’s voice will become even more prominent after founding the Trust for Historic Preservation in 1963. A future column will focus on him, along with Presidio Volunteers.

Chase, however, was the one who knew what it would take to finish Reconstruction of Presidio, an interesting shift in phrase because the project is as ground-based, as it were.

But the task was daunting. By the 1950s, only two separate buildings remained intact, the previously mentioned El Cuartel and Cañedo adobe via East Canon Perdido.

However, Santa Barbara’s status was not much different from that of the other three Presidents of California.

In San Francisco, the Spanish Presidency was incorporated into the American military fort, and there is a small row of mud-brick buildings whose date of construction is uncertain, and may have been built in the Mexican period versus the Spanish period.

The Monterrey Presidio building has completely disappeared except for the original church, dating from its extension and replacement of the roof with burnt tiles in the 1890s.

In San Diego, nothing left of El Presidio Reál de San Diego except for grounds in a park above Old Town San Diego. It can be rebuilt much more easily than Santa Barbara, because the city owns that land and there are no buildings in the way of reconstruction.

But San Diego lacks one thing: chasing Pearl, or at least the will to make it happen.

In fairness, I don’t want to underestimate the efforts and commitment of others to the Santa Barbara Presidency project. They were proud to undertake the reconstruction and were instrumental in the success of the project. There have been hundreds of people who have made major contributions, and I look forward to awarding many of them well-deserved medals in the complete manuscript that will be published in the future.

This brief overview of other California governing bodies highlights the fact that this important portion of the tangible heritage of Spanish colonial history in California has been more or less lost in contrast to the expeditions, all of which are major historical tourist sites today.

This point became apparent to me when I was first hired by SBTHP in 1981. Project Presidio is anchored in Santa Barbara’s commitment to preserving his hometown and its interpretation, but its importance goes beyond our community.

It is an essential part of our early state history, and it has national ties as part of Northern New Spain’s expansion into California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Mississippi and Florida – not to mention its international links to the history of Mexico and Spain.

My next column will outline the important relationship between the Santa Barbara County Historic Preservation Trust and California State Parks that leads to Presidential becoming El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Park.

Another major event in SBTHP history was the donation of the iconic El Paseo complex to the organization in 1971. As SBTHP champion Jerry Haas told me, the Santa Barbara Historic Preservation Fund is no longer a “nonprofit mum and pop.”
