Two earthquakes struck Taiwan early Sunday morning

Taipei, February 7 (CNA) A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Taiwan in the early hours of Sunday morning, followed by a magnitude 3.5 earthquake that struck Pingtung Prefecture in the south, according to the Central Meteorological Bureau (CWB).

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries due to the earthquakes.

The epicenter of the first earthquake, which occurred at 1:36 a.m., was located 85.1 kilometers east of Yilan County Hall in the sea east of northeastern Taiwan, at a depth of 112.0 kilometers, according to the CWB earthquake report.

The highest earthquake intensity, which measures the actual impact of the earthquake, was highest in Yilan County and Miaoli County, at 4 on the Taiwanese 7-layer intensity scale.

The quake measured 3.0 in Hualien County, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu Province and Hsinchu City. CWB data showed that 2 were measured in Taipei, Taichung, Nantou County, Taitung County, Changhua County, Yunlin County and Chiayi Province.

Also early Sunday morning, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Pingtung County at 2:48 am, according to the Labor and Budget Bureau.

The epicenter was located about 72.2 km southeast of Pingtung County Hall in Mudan Town, at a depth of 7.5 km.

CWB data showed that the earthquake intensity was the highest in Pingtung County, with a score of 3 on the 7-layer intensity scale.
