Japan’s Ineos shuts down its Sendai refinery after the February 13 earthquake

Singapore (ICIS) – A spokesperson for Japanese company INEOS said on Monday that it has shut down its 145,000 bpd refinery in Sendai following the earthquake that struck Japan’s eastern coast on February 13th.

An ICIS spokesperson said the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) remains closed and “the restart schedule has not yet been set”.

“After the earthquake, some facilities in Nigishi have stopped due to power cuts,” he added, without elaborating.

ENEOS produces aromatics – benzene, mixed xylene, and toluene – as well as propylene and essential oils at its location in Negishi, according to ICIS data.

More than 100 people were injured in the earthquake that struck late Saturday night, which also caused widespread blackouts.

The 7.3-magnitude earthquake occurred on February 13 at around 23:08 JST (14:08 GMT), and hit Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, the same areas that were struck by the massive earthquake about 10 years ago that triggered a tsunami.

This earthquake is considered as aftershock [March] 2011 off the Pacific coast of the Tohoku earthquake, “according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Tokyo Electric Power Holding Company said that the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear power plants had not recorded any anomalies after the strong earthquake.
