Most of Utah State felt the effects of COVID-19, as graduates were postponed, classes moved online, parks and areas closed and more.

Then in the midst of all this, on March 18 at 7:09 am, Magna and much of northern Utah were hit by a 5.7 earthquake. While the earthquake caused limited damage and no injuries were reported, the biggest effect was anxiety.

In light of recent events, many students are starting to think more seriously about preparing for emergencies. But for college students, this can be difficult.

“College students are in a unique position. They don’t have much living space. They have no income. They don’t store much food in general,” said Chris Hamlet, director of the Emergency Management Department. “This makes them vulnerable, but not without full protection.”

Now, almost a month after the earthquake, Hamlet and Jeffrey Graphite, director of emergency management at the University of Utah, have provided information on the best ways in which you can prepare for emergencies as a college student.

Prepare the food supply

Making food supplies is something that most college students suffer from. Money and limited space make food storage difficult, but Graviet and Hamlet have offered some simple solutions that shouldn’t be excessive.

Graviet recommended “Be prepared with at least 16 ounces of water and 1,200 calories.”

This is an easy supply of food that students can carry in their backpacks. Many students have a reusable water bottle that they can refill in multiple locations across campus and 1,200 calories that can be three or four protein bars or your favorite snack. Besides this alert, Graviet has indicated that you will receive updated information that provides instructions on what to do and where to go. “What distinguishes all these sites is that they are all new. So they have the best chance to stay,” said Graffit. “They are also big buildings that can house hundreds, perhaps thousands of people.”

And graphite explained that these buildings also contain generators, showers and bathrooms, many of which have kitchens, which makes them a suitable place for accommodation. In the aftermath of the disaster, students will be deported from the classroom to a shelter, until transportation arrangements are made to return them to their local state.

“Our goal, if we have a major earthquake, is to try to get our students, faculty, and staff out of the campus within 24 hours,” he said.
