New images of the chaos and damage caused by two major earthquakes surfaced on Raul Island near the island on March 5.

Items from warehouse and books fell from shelves on Raul Island after two major earthquakes shook the remote area.

Significant seismic activity began with a 7.3-magnitude event off the Eastern Cape around 2.30am on March 5. This was followed by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake below the sea floor near Raul Island at around 6.40 am.

The Navy ship Canterbury headed for the island on Wednesday, which is about 1,000 kilometers northeast of New Zealand, with small teams from GNS and MetService on board.
