Coronavirus: worshipers still have access to Georgia churches despite restrictions – BBC News

Orthodox Christians around the world are celebrating Easter – the most important holiday on the calendar, with several restrictions and bans.

Officials in Europe, the Middle East and Africa were urged to attend the services, fearing that there would be a limit to coronavirus infections.

However, in Georgia, worshipers still have access to churches.

The government has banned moving all private cars before Easter Sunday. The cemeteries, which Georgians typically visit on Easter Monday, are also closed.

Violators of the emergency law, among other restrictions, prohibit meetings of more than three people, with fines of up to almost £ 800 ($ 1,000; $ 900).

And yet many Georgians wonder why the government made an exception for the Orthodox Church. Thousands have continued to worship freely in churches across the country.

The Church has refused to adapt its customs. The priests give the Holy Communion with a shared spoon.

At least two priests have tested positive for Covid-19. The midnight service of Holy Week continued.
