The school lunch menu has changed in Japan as ceremonial rice was deemed inappropriate on the anniversary of the earthquake.

YOKOHAMA – A last-minute change was made to the March 11 lunch menu at municipal elementary schools in this city south of Tokyo, after school personnel claimed that the original list of red bean rice – usually eaten on ceremonial occasions – was not appropriate at The tenth anniversary of the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

According to the Yokohama Municipal Board of Education Department of Education, red bean rice was to be served per day in a total of 89 schools located in the city’s Totsuka, Siya, Hodogaya and Izumi wards, as well as in some Minami Ward districts, out of around 340 schools in Yokohama. The meal is usually served annually at the end of the school year to celebrate students ’graduation and transition to the next grade.

Special rice was due to be introduced over several days in all schools in the city this year as well. However, a few days before this date, several school-affiliated parties contacted the Municipal Education Council to question the decision. The council then hurriedly arranged with the food suppliers and replaced the lunch menu with set meals for a separate day. The Board of Education said it provided an explanation, including why the list was changed, to children and parents in the affected schools on March 10.

Representatives on the city’s Board of Education create annual plans for their lunch menus. Although they have a chance to review the rolls in the fall, the March 11 list for red bean rice wasn’t seen as a problem until the last minute. After an inquiry, a representative of the health and education department on the board said, “We have failed to give adequate consideration as a city government.”
