Player ratings: FC Dallas vs San Jose Earthquakes

FC Dallas traveled to San Jose, losing 3-0 to Earthquakes. In our first player ratings for the new season, we take a look at who shined and who suffered in the last game.

Note: 6 is the rating given to average MLS performance

Jimmy Maurer (6.4) – I know what you’re thinking, “This rating is way too high for a player who allowed three goals”. Sure, three goals defeated Jimmy, but he had to face two penalties and present this beauty:

Jimmy left the match due to a shoulder sprain and it is unclear at the moment if he will be available for the weekend’s match against Portland.

Bressan (6.6), Jose Martinez (7.1), Matt Hedges (6.4) – The three-man back line played really well. You can’t blame any of them for the two penalties, but they could be criticized for the other two goals. Matt Hedges was withdrawn due to a minor ankle injury.

Jose Martinez was the preeminent player in the group and finished with three tackles, three interceptions, two playoffs, one blocked shot, and a 79.6% pass with two key passes.

Ryan Hollingshead (6.0) and John Nelson (5.9) – None of the players had a good back and Nelson was the last line of defense in the second goal, which he misjudged … as did the whole team:

Tanner Tesman (5.4) and Brian Acosta (6.4) – The midfield mix from Tisman and Acosta simply didn’t work out well. Tisman in particular seemed very slow in his defensive reactions. Tesman gave up the second penalty kick at handball, so his rating took a big hit. Acosta actually played better once the team switched to a 4-3-3 mode in the second half.

Jader O’Brien (6.2), Freddy Vargas (5.8), Franco Gaara (5.8) – The attack suffered a lot, and most FCD fans were impatient with Gaara’s lack of goalscoring. O’Brien was the only real threat to the group and deserved a higher rating, but I can’t let him slip on the really stupid penalty kick he fired.

Felipe (6.3), Andres Recorte (7.0), Ricardo Pepe (7.1), Paxton Bomical (6.5), Eddie Mungoma (6.2) – Pepe is the man of the match, simply for this:

The child signs up and records the results quickly. Pepi needs to keep scoring, in any limited minutes he gets to get Luchi’s hand to make him a key player. All the reserves played well, with Ricoeur and Paxton tying up well in the middle. Felipe looked solid and able to get off the grid, which is a good sign, given that it likely will be the start of this week.

Luchi (5.4) – From formation to squad options, to substitution decisions, Luchi will have to answer tons of questions from an unhappy fan base.
