6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Mongolia

Ulan Bator, May 3 (Xinhua) – A 6.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Khovsgol Province in northern Mongolia on Monday afternoon, according to the country’s Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics.

The institute initially issued a report that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2, but updated it to 6.3 after several minutes.

The institute said in a statement that the quake occurred about 32 kilometers southwest of Khankh, an area of ​​the province, at around 4:46 pm local time (0846 GMT).

The strong earthquake was felt in many parts of the country, including the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and the provinces of Khovsgol, Orkhon, Darkjan-Ull, Bulgan and Arkjanjay, but no damage was reported.

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said a magnitude 5.6 earthquake jolted 27 kilometers southwest of Torte, Mongolia at 0846 GMT on Monday.

The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter, which is 17.73 km deep, was initially identified at 51.307 degrees north latitude and 100.4228 degrees east longitude.
