A strong, shallow earthquake jolted southwest China near Myanmar on Friday. There were no immediate reports of injuries, but the US Geological Survey said damage was likely.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and was centered 10 kilometers (six miles) below the surface of the Earth about 28 kilometers (17 miles) northwest of Dali City, a scenic area in Yunnan Province. Shallow earthquakes often cause more damage to the Earth’s surface, especially in populated areas.

The US Geological Survey said the quake triggered a strong jolt around Dali. It said there was little likelihood of casualties, but significant economic losses were likely.

The region experiences frequent seismic activity. In 2020, a magnitude 5 earthquake in Yunnan kills four and injured 23 others, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

China’s worst earthquake in recent years struck the mountainous western part of Sichuan Province, north of Yunnan, in 2008, killing nearly 90,000 people.
