Earthquake hits under the southern flank of Hawaiian volcano

The United States Geological Survey’s Volcano Observatory in Hawaii confirmed that a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Sunday down the southern side of Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawaii.

The observatory said the quake was centered about 9 miles south of the volcano, at a depth of about five miles. According to the observatory, weak light has been reported in the island’s vibration.

Ken Hoon, the observatory scientist in charge, said in a statement that the quake had no apparent impact on the volcanoes of Kilauea or Mauna Loa. Both volcanoes are located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

“We don’t see detectable changes in activity at the peaks or along fault areas in Kilauea or Mauna Loa as a result of this earthquake,” Hoon said, adding that aftershocks were possible.

Forty earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or more have been recorded on the south side of Kilauea over the past 20 years, according to the observatory.
