4.6 Richter earthquake shakes the Greek city of Elasuna

An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale shook the Greek city of Elasuna, located near the city of Larissa in Thessaly, on Tuesday evening.

According to the Greek Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter was located 14 km (8.7 mi) southwest of Elassona.

The Geodynamic Institute noted that a few small seismic events were recorded in the area on Tuesday afternoon. No damage or injuries were reported.

In March, the region was hit by a strong earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale. Many buildings in the town were completely destroyed after the earthquake, and many residents had to flee their homes.

The most affected village in the area was Misuhori, near Alasuna, where the local church and some old homes were badly damaged in March.

Greece is prone to earthquakes

Greece is located in a region of high seismic activity. The vast majority of earthquakes cause no damage or injuries.

Last October, an earthquake that struck the island of Samos in eastern Greece and the nearby Turkish coast killed two people on Samos and at least 75 people in Turkey.

The country is located in a complex border area in the eastern Mediterranean between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate.

The northern part of Greece is located on the Eurasian plate, while the southern part is located on the Aegean plate.

The Aegean plate is moving southwestward with respect to the Eurasian plate at a rate of 30 mm per year while the African plate is depressing northward, below the Aegean plate, at a rate of 40 mm per year.

The northern plate boundary is a relatively scattered divergent boundary while the convergent southern boundary forms the Hellenic arc.

These two plate boundaries give rise to two contradictory tectonic patterns, extending over the rift zones trending between east and west with tectonics sliding over the SW-NE rift zones throughout western and central Greece, the Peloponnese and the northern Aegean and shrinking in the southern Aegean, continuing around the Ionian islands .

The southern Aegean is the site of the volcanic arc and is characterized by extension. To the east of Crete along the Hellenic Arc, the movement of tectonic slip with some extension becomes important.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
