The ruling by U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez sparked scathing criticism from gun control advocates and Governor Gavin Newsom after the judge compared the AR-15 to a Swiss army knife.

“…the fact that this judge compared the AR-15 — a weapon of war used on the battlefield — to a Swiss Army knife completely undermines the credibility of this decision and is a slap in the face for families who have lost loved ones to this weapon,” Newsom said.

Also, a swarm earthquake intermittently hit the area near the Salton Sea and the Mexican border over the weekend. As of midday Sunday, about 603 tremors have been reported, USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin told CNN. The largest small earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 struck on Saturday.

“Earthquakes in Imperial Valley often come in swarms. They last until they stop,” seismologist Lucy Jones wrote on Twitter.
