Android Earthquake alerts go viral next year

Back in April, Google activated the Android Earthquake Alerts System in Greece and New Zealand. This Google Play Services-powered mechanism is now up and running in seven more countries as the global launch begins.

The Android Earthquake Alerts System uses your phone’s accelerometer to detect the initial P wave generated by earthquakes. Your device sends a city-wide location that doesn’t include a zip code or street address to a Google earthquake detection server. The company then checks before sending a loud notice that includes location and size before the devastating S-wave strikes. This alert can take over your screen and provide a reminder to drop, cover, and hang up.

This system is now available for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Looking ahead, Google plans to roll out this capability globally over the next year, starting with countries with a higher earthquake risk and working from there. Wide availability of Android devices with Play Services will be required.

The company’s stated goal is to create “the largest earthquake detection network in the world.” This comes because building a ground-based network of seismographs, such as the USGS ShakeAlert in California and the West Coast, is not always possible.

Android users can opt out from Device Settings > Location > Advanced Options > Earthquake Alerts. This has been in testing since last year, but Google just started sending out notifications in two countries in April. The company previously shared what the Android Earthquake Alerts System captures after the September 2020 Los Angeles earthquake.
