An earthquake shakes parts of the Wabash Valley.

Park County, IND. (WTHI) – Some thought it was a cracked tire, a fallen tree, or even an explosion! But, many were surprised to learn that it turned out to be a ground tool.

“I was looking upstairs for a book in my bookshelf, and all of a sudden, it felt like someone had hit the house,” Park County resident Jerry Bates said. “I felt like it was starting to shake. I yelled to my wife, ‘Did you fall?'” Then she yelled at me, “Baby, did you fall down the stairs?” I ran quickly and said, “I think we just had an earthquake.”

On Thursday afternoon, several residents, such as Jerry and Donna Bates, were left a little shaken.

“You’re just full of questions like, What was that!” Donna Bates, a Park County resident, said.

On Thursday afternoon at 3:18 p.m., the US Geological Survey reported a 3.8-magnitude earthquake. The epicenter was just 1.8 miles west of Bloomingdale, Indiana or about 5 miles northwest of Rockville. This is one of the largest earthquakes the state has experienced in years.

“Right now, it really gets your attention because you don’t know what it is,” said Jim Mays, chair of the Park County Board of Commissioners. “You don’t know if a tree fell on the house or if the house fell, and you’re right in the middle of it.”

An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 may seem very small, but it is relatively high for the inhabitants of the Wabash Valley.

“I’ve probably felt like 4 or 5 in my life, but that was the biggest feeling I’ve had by far,” Mays said.

The good news is that Park County officials say there have been no reports of any injuries or significant structural damage in the area. They say they are grateful it wasn’t bigger.

“It could have been harmful, and it could have cost a lot of people a lot of money and maybe lives,” said Mickey. “But she didn’t. So we’re fine, and we’re lucky that everything turned out the way it did.”
