Japan considers moleballing up to 100 coal-fired power plants

Japan has pledged to study concrete ways to stop old coal-fired power plants from releasing more fuel by 2030, following reports that it plans to take in about 100 aging plants.

The world’s third-largest economy has fallen into flames to continue building coal plants at home, as well as funding projects to build them abroad, particularly in Southeast Asia.

Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshi Kajiyama said he had instructed officials to make proposals to “cut off inefficient coal-fired power plants and make renewable energy a major source of energy”.

Options may include tightening adjustment to ensure that aging plants expire by 2030, he added.

Mr Kajiyama declined to give figures, but local media reported that the government planned to extract 100 of the 114 plants built before the mid-1990s that emit more carbon dioxide than new models.

In total, Japan has 140 coal-fired power plants, providing almost a third of the country’s electricity generation.

Coal is the second largest method of generating energy after LNG plants, which provide 38 percent of the country’s needs.

There are also more than a dozen projects to build coal-fired power plants in Japan.

Japan’s basic energy plan aims to meet 22-24 percent of the country’s energy needs met by renewable sources including wind and solar by 2030, a figure critics describe as unclear based on current levels of about 17 percent .

Tokyo has been trying to reduce carbon emissions after shutting down its nuclear reactors after the 2011 meltdown in Fukushima caused by a devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Mr Kajiyama said officials were now “in the final stages of discussions” on stricter rules on exporting coal-fired power generation.

Japanese Megabanks have been the main funders of such projects, but have changed direction, said Yukari Takamura, an energy expert at the Institute for Future Initiatives at the University of Tokyo.

Now they need “a clear policy guideline” to follow, she told AFP.
