Patients in the emergency department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown may expect longer-than-usual waits Saturday to see a doctor for less serious injuries and illnesses, Health PEI says.
In a press release issued around 2 p.m., Health PEI said the emergency department is over capacity.
“As always, people are assessed when they present to the emergency department by a triage nurse. People with more serious illnesses or injuries will be seen sooner. People experiencing serious illnesses or injuries should still seek urgent care in the emergency department. .” the notice says.
Health PEI said it is implementing the overcapacity policy, which increases the number of beds available across the system, and is working to move hospital patients to their community hospitals or long-term care or community care where possible.
The health authority said anyone with urgent medical needs should call 911 or seek emergency services when:
- Experiencing discomfort or tightness in the chest.
- Experiencing unusual shortness of breath.
- Experiencing abdominal pain.
- Experiencing prolonged and persistent headaches or dizziness.
- An injury may require stitches or involve a broken bone.
- A child has prolonged diarrhea or vomiting.
- A baby under six months of age has a temperature of 38C (100.4F) or higher.
