England’s last surviving mountain rabbits ‘at risk’ from global warming
Nida Al-Fulaij, fundraising manager at the Peoples’ Trust for Endangered Species, said: “The Peak District’s altitude and colder climate is the isid habitat for mountain rabbits, which are perfectly adapted.
“But with the onset of warmer and more messy weather, these rabbits can be in trouble.”
“We can not let them die,” she added.
Faith hopes the study’s findings – to be published later in the year – will help guide the successful returns of “shy but striking” species, as well as protect those that remain.
Carlos Bedson, a biologist from the Metropolitan University of Manchester who is leading the study said: “Mountain rabbits are actually an Arctic ice age animal and it is a privilege to be able to see one in England, surviving here in lower latitudes.
“We are so lucky to have them.”
He added that it was amazing to think that “at normal times”, “you could be working one Friday at your office or school or factory, and then on Saturday you could travel by car to the Peak District and go out and have a wild Arctic life the experience of exploring all yours ”.
Mountain rabbits, a sister species of Arctic rabbit, had died in England during the last ice age still surviving in Scotland.
Landowners in the 1870s tried to bring them back to England, however they were largely unsuccessful.
Only those released in the Peak District survived.
Rabbit wool turns from brown in summer to white during winter which led earlier biologists to believe that they ate snow to turn white.
In fact, the change is related to changes in day length and air temperature, which prevents them from producing brown melanin in their wool.
