Springfield, Missouri (KY3)-Springfield-Greene County Health Department reported a new COVID-19 milestone on Friday. That’s something health leaders never wanted.
Medical leaders say Springfield Hospital has reported the most critical care and ICU patients since the pandemic began. They say that 44% of the 167 hospitalized patients are believed to be in the critical care unit or ICU. Of those 167 patients, 73 live in Green County.
Health leaders reported 163 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday morning. This is the most case since mid-January.
In southwestern Missouri, cases are below winter highs, but the orbit is steeper than in previous spikes. Health leaders have blamed the recent surge in delta variants. Mutant versions account for more than 20% of new COVID-19 infections in the United States and double in just two weeks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week. Delta Variant is responsible for half of the new cases across Swath, including Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.
Many counties in southwestern Missouri have also reported surges this week. Increasing cases have been reported this week in some counties in northern Arkansas.
Health leaders continue to push the COVID-19 vaccine to stop its spread. Just under 38% of Green County is vaccinated against the virus. As of Wednesday, 65.6% of Americans over the age of 18 had at least one injection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This figure is expected to exceed 67% by July 4.
