Kerala reports the first confirmed case of Zika virus
Kerala was first confirmed on Thursday Zika Virus from Thiruvananthapuram.
The state also identified 13 more suspicious cases and sent samples to the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
What is a deer?
Zika virus is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes. The vector is Aedes aegypti, which also spreads dengue and chikungunya. In addition, infected people can be sexually infected with Zika virus. Zika fever, first identified in monkeys in Uganda in 1947, was detected in humans five years later. Sporadic cases have been reported worldwide since the 1960s, but the first outbreak occurred only in 2007 on the island of Yap in the Pacific Ocean. How dangerous is Zika fever?
Fear around Zika is mainly associated with microcephaly, especially when pregnant women are infected. Generally, the virus is not considered dangerous to anyone other than pregnant women. According to the WHO, a sharp increase in Guillain-Barré syndrome has been reported in some countries with Zika outbreaks, including Brazil. This is a neuropathy that can lead to paralysis and death. Following a 2017 study of confirmed cases in Brazil, a study by the National Institutes of Health estimated a case fatality rate of 8.3%.
Haven’t there been any previously reported cases of Zika in India?
In 2018, 80 cases of Zika virus were detected in Jaipur. This was the first major virus outbreak in India.
In 2017, WHO published the following report: “On May 15, 2017, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India (MoHFW) reported three cases of decavirus disease confirmed in the laboratory in the Bapunagar area of the Ahmedabad district of Gujarat. State, India.”
In July 2017, the Ministry of Health responded to a congressional question stating that there had been four cases of Zika fever so far. The fourth was reported by the Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu.
