CA reports first West Nile virus death in 2021
San Luis Obispo, CA — The first death in 2021 associated with the West Nile virus was confirmed in San Luis Obispo County, California Public Health Service, announced this week.
“As West Nile virus activity in the state is increasing, we urge Californians to take all possible precautions to prevent mosquito bites,” said California Public Health Director and State Public Health Officer. Dr. Thomas J. Aragon said.
When a person or animal is bitten by an infected mosquito, a deadly virus is transmitted. As of Friday, West Nile virus was found in 45 dead birds in 6 counties of Golden State and 177 mosquitoes in 13 counties, according to public health officials.
Temperatures are rising across the state this week, which could increase the number of mosquitoes and infectious diseases, officials said.
“So far this season, activity is at expected levels,” officials said in a statement. “The risk of illness from WNV usually increases during this time and is highest from summer to early autumn.”
West Nile virus is usually amplified by the climate, the number of birds and mosquitoes in the area, and the level of viral immunity in the bird.
Although the risk of serious illness is relatively low, less than 1 percent are more likely to develop serious neurological disorders such as encephalitis and meningitis, officials said. Californians over the age of 50 and people with diabetes or hypertension are more likely to get sick.
CDPH provided the following tips to ensure your safety:
1.1. DEET- Follow the instructions on the label and apply an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, or IR3535. Repellents keep mosquitoes from biting you. Do not use insect repellents on children under 2 months of age.
2.2. Dawn and dusk- Mosquitoes that carry WNV are usually bitten early in the morning and in the evening, so it is important to wear proper clothing and repellents when outdoors during these times. Make sure you have a screen that fits snugly against mosquitoes on your doors and windows. Repair or replace screens with crevices or holes.
3.3. Drain – Mosquitoes lay eggs on standing water. Empty flowerpots, old car tires, buckets, and other containers to eliminate any water source in your possessions. If you are aware of a swimming pool that is not properly maintained, please contact your local mosquito and carrier management agency.
