Chesapeake reports that West Nile virus activity is “increasing”
Chesapeake – Chesapeake Health Department officials have confirmed “increased West Nile virus (WNV) activity” in the city detected by the Chesapeake Mosquito Management Committee.
Lisa Wagenbrenner, director of mosquito management at Chesapeake, said mosquitoes tested positive for the disease “at a higher rate than normal” this summer.
“Sporadic thunderstorms and human activities such as watering lawns and cleaning cars have perpetuated mosquito breeding habitats,” said Wagenbrenner.
Health officials at Chesapeake are now calling on residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their families as recent rains lead to an increase in mosquitoes.
The Chesapeake is not the first city to report WNV activity in Hampton Roads. Just a few days ago, the Norfolk Public Health Service announced that the virus was detected in two mosquito samples in the city.
West Nile virus spreads by being bitten by infected mosquitoes. WNV can affect the human nervous system. Many people become mildly shaped and experience fever, headaches, and muscle aches that last for days to weeks.
Most people recover completely, but severe cases of WNV can lead to meningitis, encephalitis, paralysis, and even death. Health officials say recovery from severe WNV can take months or years.
The highest risk of serious WNV disease is in adults over the age of 50 and in people whose immunity is suppressed due to diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
VDH publishes several guidelines to protect you from mosquito-borne diseases.
- When you are outdoors in a mosquito infested area, use an insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.
- Wear long, light and loose clothing.
- House doors and windows should be thoroughly screened to prevent mosquito invasion.
- Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds from your yard by removing old tires, buckets, tubs, toys and other items that hold rainwater. Dump a decorative container (eg bird bath) weekly or use mosquito pesticide pellets or dunks regularly to dispose of larger containers (eg decorative ponds, stagnant pools) ..
- Clean the rain gutter and downspout screen.
