COVID-19: Increased number of cape cod clusters linked to delta variants to 430
Highly contagious delta mutants have become a major concern of the Cape Cod community following the recent outbreak of new COVID-19 infections.
As of Tuesday, July 27, Provincetown had more than 430 active cases of COVID-19, more than three times as many as reported last week, most of which are subspecies-related.
According to the Massachusetts Public Health Service, sequencing of early samples associated with recent COVID-19 clusters in Provincetown tested positive for the delta mutant.
However, health officials said the total number of vaccinated people in Massachusetts was still low, at 0.1%, or 5,166 of the more than 4.3 million fully vaccinated populations.
The Provincetown Health Commission has attributed a new surge in incidents to the July 4 weekend celebration.
“We urge provincetown residents, local businesses and visitors to take precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status,” officials said.
Health officials said, “Delta mutants are known to be more susceptible to infection than the original COVID-19 virus.
“Individuals infected with the delta mutant tend to have more virus in the respiratory tract than other mutants, and infected individuals may carry the virus longer,” they said. “These two factors contribute to the increased transmission seen in the delta variant.”
According to Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), delta variants are “spreading incredibly efficiently” and currently account for more than 83% of new cases of the virus. ..
Most new infections in the United States continue among unvaccinated people. However, “breakthrough” infections, which generally cause mild illness, can occur in vaccinated people, health officials said.
