Hospitals with an abnormal increase in pediatric RSV cases
Rhode Island Providence (WPRI) — Rhode Island hospitals are seeing an increasing number of children diagnosed with the virus, usually only during the winter months.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can send people at risk of infection to hospitals.
Hasbro Children’s Hospital tells Target 12 that they usually start seeing children with RSV from November to March, but recently there has been a surge in cases in Florida and more infections on Rhode Island. ..
According to experts, RSV infects the lungs and respiratory tract, causing about 1 million children to be hospitalized each year.
For most infected people, it looks like a common cold, but the virus can cause serious complications in people under the age of two and in the elderly.
Dr. Michael Coster, a Hasbro pediatric infectious disease specialist, said:
Coster said cases rarely appeared in the summer, adding that some children had to be hospitalized.
“There may have been dozens of RSVs and bronchitis in the last few months,” he said. “Usually in the winter of our hospital, there are about 70 inpatients with 16 ICU beds, but there can be 30-40 children with bronchitis on a particular day.”
Mr Coster said the cause of the surge in the case is currently unknown, but he believes the pandemic is partly the cause.
“There is no doubt that it has something to do with COVID because COVID has taken over the people’s nose market competitively, so we didn’t see any flu or RSV,” Koster explained. “Currently, some tests for COVID often include things like flu and RSV, so we don’t usually do it, so we see a little more than we’ve seen before during this time.”
A surge in RSV cases this winter could be a problem for hospitals that also handle COVID-19 variants. The best way to prevent the spread of RSV is to wash your hands and cover your mouth when you cough.
