Health officials in Kent County discover Jamestown Canyon virus in mosquitoes
Grand Rapids, Michigan-Jamestown Canyon virus was detected in mosquitoes tested in Kent County.
This discovery is not the case for humans, the Kent County Health Department said Friday.
Health officials made a discovery during ongoing surveillance and testing with a zip code of 49504.
This is the first time Jamestown Canyon virus has been detected in Kent County.
The Jamestown Canyon virus is spread to people by infected mosquitoes.
The virus has been detected in many parts of the United States, but most cases to date have occurred in the upper Midwest.
Fever, headache, and malaise are common symptoms of the virus and can rarely cause serious illnesses such as brain infections and lining around the brain.
There are no vaccines or remedies to prevent Jamestown Canyon virus infection.
The Ministry of Health says it reduces the risk of infection by preventing mosquito bites.
“Fortunately, the steps people can take to protect themselves from other mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus will work,” said a public health epidemiologist at the Kent County Health Department. Paul Bellamy said. “At this time of the year, it’s good to practice simple and proven procedures that already know what to do to prevent mosquito bites.”
Health authorities in Kent County recommend the following preventive tactics:
- Uses mosquito repellent containing 10-35% DEET
- Wearing light-colored clothes and long-sleeved shirts and trousers
- Stay indoors at dusk
- Drain or refresh bird baths, children’s water pools, pet water bowls
- Empty other small containers that can collect water in your yard
