North Fort Myers, Florida-After a positive West Nile virus test, a North Fort Myers horse had to be euthanized.
Currently, the Lee County Mosquito Control District is working to manage and monitor the epidemic of this potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease.
“If you find these antibodies, you know that there are mosquitoes around them that are spreading the disease,” said Eric Jackson of the Mosquito Control District in Lee County.
Eric Jackson explained from the poultry farm at headquarters that the chickens housed in the LCMCD are a kind of early warning system.
“We test weekly. It’s not just inland areas where freshwater mosquitoes are expected to be found, as it’s throughout the county,” he said.
Freshwater mosquitoes, called Culex pipiens, are the major carriers of the West Nile virus.
That’s why it’s so important to drain the water in your property and regularly check your chicken’s blood.
“This is a very important monitoring tool for tracking viral activity in certain areas of Lee County,” said Milton Sterling, Head of Science Intelligence at LCMCD.
The data collected in their lab can be used to better understand the next places to treat nasty parasites.
