Pennsylvania Health Department warns of increasing cases of syphilis in Delaware County
Delaware County is expected to see more than 100% more cases of new “early” syphilis between 2020 and 2021, with the highest prevalence in 20 years, according to a recommendation released Monday by the Pennsylvania Health Advisory Network.
In the first half of 2021, Delaware County reported 104 cases of early syphilis, or cases within 2 years of the first infection, according to a statement from the county. This figure takes into account primary, secondary, and early potential cases and is already above the total number of early syphilis cases reported across 2020.
“Based on current trends, the number of early syphilis reported in 2021 is expected to exceed 210 cases, an increase of 104% from 2020,” the release said. “The predicted 210 cases of early syphilis reported in 2021 will represent the maximum number of cases reported in the county in 20 years.”
According to the release, women are projected to report 50 cases of early syphilis by the end of the year, an increase of 178% compared to the 18 cases reported in 2020. Women of childbearing age (15-44 years) also account for 84% of cases already reported in the first half of 2021.
Due to the proliferation of cases, the Pennsylvania Department of Health recommends that pregnant women undergo syphilis testing during their first prenatal visit, late pregnancy, and childbirth.
DOH also recommends testing for syphilis and HIV in all patients who have recently tested positive for other sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, and anyone who shows symptoms of syphilis. doing.
