Bubonic plague found in Colorado cats
According to officials, domestic cats near the Elk Meadows Open Space in Evergreen tested positive for bubonic plague in late October.
Jefferson County Public Health detailed in a news release that cats are likely to have encountered sick rodents. This is the first cat to have plague in Jefferson County this year.
“Plague is a serious illness and we don’t want to see cases of animal-borne disease in domestic pets, but it is normal and expected that some animals will get plague every year in Jefferson County.” Said director Jim Lada. Environmental hygiene services in Jefferson County Public Health during release. “Fortunately, modern antibiotics are effective against plague and, if treated promptly, can avoid serious complications, illness, or death.”
Plague is an infectious disease caused by Yersinia pestis. Without proper precautions, humans and livestock can get sick. Some of those steps include eliminating all sources of food, shelter and access for wildlife around the house and maintaining a garbage-free garden. Authorities also recommend avoiding contact with sick and dead animals, taking precautions around sick pets, and consulting a veterinarian about flea control for pets.
When infected, humans and pets can be bitten by fleas and infected with plague. Animal coughs, bites and blood can also infect the disease.

The human symptoms of plague consist of high fever, chills, headache, nausea, extreme pain, and the sudden onset of swollen lymph nodes, which occur 2 to 7 days after exposure. Unlike in ancient times, when the disease often caused death, plague could be effectively treated with antibiotics when diagnosed early.
