A child in northern Virginia was the first in the state to die of multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in a child. This is a rare complication of COVID-19 that damages the body’s organs.

The Virginia Department of Health described the victim as a child between the ages of 10 and 19 who lived in Prince William’s Health District. Friday’s announcement said no other information would be disclosed to respect his family and protect his privacy.

He or she was the 16th person under the age of 20 to die of COVID in Virginia since the pandemic began.

“We are overwhelmed by this sad news and our hearts are directed at the child’s family and friends,” Virginia Health Commissioner Dr. Norman Oliver said in a statement.
