Lawrence County, Ohio (WSAZ)- Two cases of the Omicron mutant have been detected in Buckeye.
The Ohio Health Department made a presentation on Saturday afternoon.
However, while Omicron remains the new COVID-19 variant, health leaders continue to be concerned about the spread of the delta variant.
Two cases of Omicron were revealed after genomic sequencing was performed in the Ohio State University laboratory.
Of the 1,000 PCR tests sequenced in the lab, two were omicrons and the remaining 998 were cases of delta COVID.
According to ODH, these two cases of Omicron were discovered last Tuesday in central Ohio.
Variants could not be detected until sequencing was done.
A major concern for health leaders today is that the Omicron variant may look like a common cold or have similar characteristics to the flu, which could lead to a lack of testing. There is.
Local health leaders are now encouraging people to get flu shots, COVID vaccines, and COVID boosters when they are eligible.
Debbie Fisher, a spokeswoman for the Lawrence County Health Department, said: “You can think of it as a cold, flu, or COVID. Taking a test is the only way to make sure you’re infected with COVID.”
Figures on the ODH dashboard since January 2021 show that more than 44,000 people have been hospitalized in Ohio for COVID.
About 95.5 percent of those patients were unvaccinated.
Of those 44,000, 12,780 died of COVID-related complications and 610 complete vaccinated individuals died of COVID-related complications in the same time frame.
The Lawrence County Health Department continues to host weekly vaccine clinics.
