Florida COVID cases are increasing, but infection rates remain low

Tallahassee, Florida (CAPITOL NEWS SERVICE)-Weekly COVID cases have steadily increased in sunshine over the past three weeks, increasing by 24% from the week of November 26 to the week of December 3 alone. ..
Authorities said last week that 13,530 cases of COVID were reported.
That’s negligible compared to this summer, when the state had more than 20,000 cases a day, but epidemiologists say it’s remarkable.
Dr. Cindy Prince, an epidemiologist at the University of Florida, said:
Last year, the state’s winter surge was worse than the 2020 summer surge, but Dr. Prince does not expect this winter to repeat itself.
“We are benefiting from the vaccine this year, so I don’t think the winter surge will be that high,” said Dr. Prince.
Dr. Jason Salemi, an epidemiologist at the USF, points out that Florida currently has some of the lowest infection and hospitalization rates in the country.
“We have the fourth lowest new hospitalization rate in the country,” said Dr. Salemi.
However, Dr. Salemi states that it is not yet clear how Omicron will be involved in the potential winter surge.
“The early signs are that it’s unlikely to cause a serious illness, but I think it’s a bit too early to say so,” Dr. Salemi said.
There is one obvious thing.
Even with the winter surge, the governor has no intention of returning to blockades or orders.
The experts we spoke with advised Florida citizens to take their own precautions, especially if they were at high risk of severe illness.
“I’m wearing a mask and definitely vaccinated,” said Dr. Prince.
According to the state’s latest COVID report, 70% of Florida residents over the age of 5 have been vaccinated at least once.
Officials said 90 percent of Florida citizens over the age of 65 were vaccinated.
Both epidemiologists said that if vaccinated more than 6 months ago, especially older Florida people and people with pre-existing conditions should also consider receiving booster injections.
