First SC case of COVID Omicron mutant detected in Charleston

Charleston, South Carolina (WCSC / AP)-The South Carolina Medical College has identified the first three known cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the state.
Scientists at the MUSC Institute for Molecular Pathology process weekly positive COVID-19 samples to check for mutations and mutations of interest. This week, their sequencing team detected the first three cases of Omicron mutants in South Carolina.
“This is three cases, all in lowcountry. Two of the three were fully vaccinated, but were not boosted and one was vaccinated only once.” Said Dr. Julie Hirschhorn, Lab Director.
The first Omicron case in South Carolina involved a COVID sample collected for testing on December 4. This means that the rapidly spreading variants have been here for at least two weeks.
The MUSC will attend a South Carolina Health and Environmental Administration briefing at 2:00 pm to provide information on the discoveries, what they know about the three cases, and what they mean for the vacationing community.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the first US case of this variant was identified on December 1. Just one week later, as of December 8, cases were reported from all over the country, with 22 states reporting at least one case.
According to counts held by Johns Hopkins University, COVID-19 killed more than 800,000 in the United States on Tuesday.
It is seen as doubly tragic, given that more than 200,000 of those lives were lost after the vaccine was actually made available last spring. The death toll is about the same as the combined Atlanta and St. Louis population, or the combined Minneapolis and Cleveland population. This is about the same as the number of Americans who die each year from heart disease or stroke.
