Paris (Reuters)-The wave of bird flu in Asia and Europe has a high risk of spreading to humans due to the large number of variants, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said.

Outbreaks usually begin in the fall, when the infection spreads due to the movement of wild birds.
H5N1 is one of the few strains of avian influenza that has infected humans. A total of about 850 people have been reported infected with the strain, half of which died, OIE said.
Last year, several people were infected with H5N6 in China. Previously circulating strains appear to have changed, raising concerns among some experts that they may be more infectious to people.
However, Dr. Eloit learned that most countries contain outbreaks because bird flu usually goes through close contact, and emphasized that human transmission is sporadic.
