Lassa fever patient dies at Luton & Dunstable Hospital, confirmed by NHS Trust at Bedfordshire Hospital
The first person to die of Lassa fever in the UK was being treated at Luton & Dancetable University Hospital, the NHS Trust at Bedford Hospital confirmed.
This patient was the first to die of a rare rat-borne disease in the United Kingdom, with the other two disease under investigation.

On Friday (February 11th), the UK Health and Safety Agency (UKHSA) announced that the total number of cases of Lassa fever had reached three.

Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus.
It spreads from exposure of infected mice to food and household items contaminated with urine and feces-present in many West African countries where the disease is endemic.
It can also be caught by contact with infected body fluids.
Most people with Lassa fever recover completely, but some can develop serious illness. One of the cases found in the UK has recovered and the other is treated by a specialist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.

On Friday, the Bedfordshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said:
“We will continue to support patients’ families and staff and work closely with UKHSA colleagues to conduct powerful contact tracing exercises.”
UKHSA said they are contacting individuals who have been in close contact with infected people to evaluate them.
They added that the risk to the general public “remains very low.”
Prior to these cases, only eight cases of Lassa fever were imported into the United Kingdom since 1980.
The last two cases occurred in 2009 and there was no evidence of future infection.
