National Infant Immunization Week highlighted in the Richmond community

Richmond, Virginia (WWBT)-Pediatricians are urging parents to schedule immunity appointments for their children to commemorate the National Infant Immune Week.
This week, from April 25th to 29th, it will be recognized to remind caregivers of the importance of protecting children under the age of 2 from vaccine-preventable illnesses.
According to Rebecca Epstein of the Institute of Public Health and Innovation, there are 14 illnesses that parents should know about vaccines that can prevent them.
“Measles, polio, pertussis-these are diseases we haven’t heard of for a while, because the vaccine was so effective in preventing them,” Epstein said. “But in recent years, the number of immunized animals has decreased.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has stopped many immunity to infants as it becomes increasingly difficult to schedule visits with doctors. However, Epstein said it should be more available these days, especially given the importance of the week, and still encourages family members to be contacted.
“It’s not just about immunization. It’s about overall health,” Epstein said. “It is a priority for doctors to see a doctor regularly to check for important developmental skills and health at each age.”
