NDA encourages rabbit owners to monitor bleeding disorders
The Lincoln-Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) warns Nebraska rabbit owners to look out for the severe and highly contagious viral disease of rabbits recently identified in multiple states. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) has been diagnosed as a cause of death in wild and domestic rabbits in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and Colorado, as well as domestic rabbits in Nevada and Utah and wild rabbits in California. So far, the virus has not been found in Nebraska.

Symptoms of RHDV include fever, loss of appetite, wasting, diarrhea, and respiratory illness. RHDV can also cause sudden death in rabbits. The virus spreads directly among rabbits and can survive for several weeks in contaminated environments. Currently, there are no RHDV-licensed approved vaccines in the United States, but foreign-manufactured vaccines are available in states where the virus has already been identified. RHDV does not infect pets other than humans, livestock and rabbits.
Enhanced biosecurity helps prevent the introduction and spread of diseases including viruses and RHDV. In addition to thorough cleaning and hygiene, rabbit owners should consider limiting visitors to their own rabbits and isolating additional rabbits for 30 days.
