Age-related blindness prevented by exercise in an study

And, as Gelfand points out, the observed association between increased physical activity and decreased visual acuity does not necessarily mean a causal relationship. So the Gelfand and UVA team set up a series of mouse experiments to investigate whether exercise directly affects macular degeneration. We compared two groups of mice. One group has exercise wheels in the cage and the other group has no wheels. The voluntary nature of exercise was important because forced exercise exerts many stress responses that can adversely affect outcome.
Four weeks later, researchers used a laser to induce an eye injury called choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Researchers modeled this visual loss factor in mice via laser-induced CNV.
In two experiments, the researchers found that exercising mice had 32-45% lower vascular overgrowth than mice unable to access spontaneous locomotion. Even more interesting was the discovery that exercise following laser damage did not ameliorate CNV damage. Only mice with motor preconditioning reduced subsequent eye damage.
All this suggests that, ultimately, a small amount of exercise appears to have a direct protective effect on certain types of degenerative vision loss. The exact molecular mechanism that mediates this macular protection is still unclear. One hypothesis proposed suggests that exercise has an immunomodulatory effect that can reduce the inflammatory effects that may underlie age-related macular degeneration.
The research team wants to further investigate the key mechanisms involved, with the aim of developing certain drug therapies to mimic this natural process.
