Virus was detected as the outbreak spread
The outbreak of monkeypox that reached Erie is not a widespread public health threat that COVID-19 has continued for the past two and a half years, state and local health officials said.
This is mainly because monkeypox (a viral disease similar to smallpox but less severe) does not spread as easily as COVID-19.
“That’s not the case,” said Howard Nadwarney, MD, an infectious disease specialist at St. Vincent Hospital and an adviser to the Erie County Health Department. “Monkeypox is spread by very close personal contact. In most cases, it is spread by long-term physical contact.”
Ellie’s clinic reported a case of monkeypox to the county health department on Wednesday. Local health authorities refused to provide details of the case due to patient privacy law, and the message left in the clinic was not returned.
This is believed to be the first case of monkeypox ever reported in Erie County. The current global outbreak, which began earlier this year, has infected 32 Pennsylvania residents as of Thursday morning, the Pennsylvania Health Department reported.
The Ellie case was the only case reported in northwestern Pennsylvania.
“Currently, we are working closely with the State Health Department,” said County Health Director Erin Murenak. “The state is investigating this first illness and may conduct additional investigations.”

How it spreads
Current monkeypox outbreaks are widespread in 25 US states, as well as in Europe and South America.
Gay, bisexual, or other men who have sex with men are at greatest risk of monkeypox in this outbreak, but the virus is not a sexually transmitted disease and can spread in other ways.
“Anyone can get it, but infections tend to occur among people who have random or multiple sexual partners,” Nadwarney said. “But we also saw cases of children and spouses, which is also related to families in close contact with each other.”
According to the World Health Organization, monkeypox is often passed from person to person through close contact with respiratory secretions, infected skin lesions, or recently contaminated objects.

Symptoms and treatment
