Ghana has announced the first outbreak of Marburg virus disease.
Marburg is a highly infectious viral hemorrhagic fever in the same family as Ebola virus disease. Symptoms of Marburg include diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting.
The World Health Organization has confirmed test results from two unrelated people who subsequently died in the Ashanti region of southern Ghana.
WHO says it monitors more than 90 people who have come into contact with them.
“Health authorities have responded swiftly and made a good start in case of an outbreak. This is because Marburg can easily get out of hand without immediate and decisive action. Good thing. WHO is in a position to support health authorities, and now that the outbreak has been declared, we are gathering more resources to respond, “said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Africa Regional Director.
This is the second time Marburg has appeared in West Africa. The first outbreak occurred in Guinea last September.
Marburg has also appeared in Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda.
There are no vaccines or antiviral treatments in Marburg, but WHO states that “supportive care-hydration by oral or intravenous infusion-and treatment of certain symptoms improves survival.”
