Global experts give new name to monkeypox variant
Health experts through the World Health Organization (WHO) have used Roman numerals to come up with a new name for the monkeypox strain, according to a release sent Friday.
A group of global virologists and public health experts met on Monday and decided to use Roman numerals for clades or lineages and lowercase alphanumeric characters for subclades or substrains.
The former Congo Basin (Central Africa) monkeypox clade becomes known as clade 1 (I) and the former West African clade becomes known as clade 2 (II). Additionally, clade II was agreed to consist of two subclades, WHO said.

Scientists believe that changing the way we communicate about the disease could increase knowledge sharing about outbreaks and minimize their negative impact.
WHO officials say the name change is better suited to current naming practices currently in use.
According to the WHO, the monkeypox virus was first discovered in lab monkey — hence the name — at a research facility in Copenhagen in 1958.Human monkeypox was first identified 12 years later.
The World Health Organization is currently naming new viruses with the aim of not offending cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups.
WHO is also consulting on a new name for monkeypox.
