Case of bird flu found in Union County backyard flock of chickens, officials say – WSOC TV

Union County, North Carolina — The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has announced that a flock of backyard chickens in Union County has tested positive for highpass bird flu, better known as HPAI.

A positive sample was found in the department’s lab in Raleigh. This is the first time a positive case has been confirmed in Union County.

Bird owners in the Charlotte area should be on high alert, officials said.

In late spring and early summer, bird flu was detected on nine farms in Johnston and Wayne counties. In mid-October, his HPAI was found in one of his flocks in his Wake County backyard.

“Given evidence that the HPAI virus persists in resident wild bird populations and migratory waterfowl, reports of positive backyard flocks are disappointing but not surprising,” state veterinarian Mike said. Martin said.

Flocks of fewer than 100 birds are currently being shrunk to prevent the spread of disease.

This strain of bird flu is considered to pose a low risk to humans, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, it is highly contagious to other birds, including commercial and backyard poultry flocks.

Officials also said the virus is not considered a food safety threat and infected birds will not enter the food supply.

“The high-pass bird flu threat is nationwide and likely to continue through the fall and winter,” Martin said. “Commercial operations and backyard flock owners should continue to follow strict biosecurity measures, including keeping birds as far away from wild and other livestock flocks as possible.”
