New York flu cases halved, health officials say
New York state has seen a 50% drop in confirmed flu cases, but state health officials urged people to stay vigilant as the virus swept through the country on Monday.
Influenza cases fell from 14,656 to 7,373 in the week ending 14 January, marking the fifth straight week of decline. Hospitalizations fell at a similar rate, 52%, to 798.
Still, public health officials warn this year’s flu season is still going strong. Officials are warning of a “triple epidemic” of influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
State health officials have urged New Yorkers to get their flu shot if they haven’t already, to reduce the chance of serious illness.
“It is encouraging to see fewer people getting the flu. But we are still seeing cases and it is still very important to protect children and the most vulnerable. Please don’t spread the disease to others. If you haven’t already, New Yorkers should get a flu shot to prevent getting seriously ill from the flu.
Overall, New York has reported 300,907 flu cases so far this season. Long-term and acute care facilities have reported 13 new cases of influenza this month, bringing the total so far this season to 457.
There were eight child deaths in New York. Nationally, there have been 17,000 deaths attributed to the flu this season, 85 of them involving children, according to Health Department data.
Health officials say they may consider wearing a mask, especially if they are symptomatic or live with and care for someone who is at high risk of serious illness. No mask requirements have been issued by state authorities.
Health officials also recommend washing your hands, staying home when sick, and avoiding close contact with others when sick.
