Sophie’s Legacy: Breakthroughs That May Help Save Children With Bone Cancer

Born in Norfolk, Sophie Taylor died of bone cancer at the age of five.
Her tumor has been donated to scientists, and hopes that groundbreaking research at the University of East Anglia will help identify the disease early and save more lives.
Researchers at Norwich Medical College at the university say this is the most important study on bone cancer in the last 40 years.
By the time one-quarter of children are diagnosed, the cancer has spread, but there are new ways to separate cancer cells from the blood before they move to other parts of the body.
Unfortunately Norwich’s Sophie Taylor was too late, but the heritage she left was able to help others.
Born in Norwich, Sophie was diagnosed with bone cancer in January 2018 and underwent surgery to amputate part of her leg.
Despite the spread of cancer, Sophie continued to stick his tongue out to the disease-inviting others to do the same.
She has gained a lot of supporters-including former Norwich City footballer James Madison who described her as her best friend.
But a year later, Sophie died when the cancer reached the lungs.
Sophie’s parents Alex and Kirsty Taylor told ITV News Anglia: “I don’t think there is anything worse than losing a child.
“We’ve reached a point now. I don’t know if the content is the right word, but it’s happier to accept Sophie’s affirmation than to stick to the denial that Sophie isn’t here.”
Obviously, we can’t do anything to help Sophie and save her, but if her legacy continues to help and save others, I’m the best it can be for us I think, and if Sophie is looking down, she’ll be proud to know she was a big part of it.
Sophie’s cancer tumors were donated to the University of East Anglia to support the study.
Dr. Darrell Green leads bone cancer research at the UEA Norwich Medical School.
Dr. Green was urged to begin a science career after the death of his childhood best friend Ben, who grew up in Settford
He said: “What we can do here essentially is to isolate the blood cancer cells undergoing the expansion process.
“Bone cancer chemotherapy has been around since the late 1970s, and there isn’t much cure for it since. What we hope to benefit from this study is to target the exact cause of the spread. ”

For Sophie, her research may have been too late, but her legacy continues to live through science.
