New Covid variant ‘Arcturus’ could cause new symptoms
Miami – The World Health Organization has promoted the rapidly growing Omicron sublineage XBB.1.16 as a new variant of interest.
XBB.1.16 is the offspring of recombinant XBB, a mashup of two BA.2 substrains. On social media, like the brightest star in the northern hemisphere, the variant is called Arcturus.
“It was confirmed in India earlier this year and has spread to 29 other countries, including the United States. It is still part of the Omicron lineage, so these are specific subspecies confirmed last year. It’s a mutation that enhances and increases infectivity,” said Dr. Nehanarula of Stanford Health Care.
Dr. Narula said we are seeing an increase in children. She added that the good news is that it’s not causing more serious illness.
The symptoms of the Arcturus variant differ slightly from previous variants.
“When it comes to symptoms, we still see sore throats, coughs, fevers, etc., but the new symptoms people are talking about are conjunctivitis symptoms, or, as they are more commonly known, pink eyes. It’s happening to both children…and adults,” Dr. Narula said.
She said this isn’t particularly new to Covid and has been seen with the original strain.
“Previous strains have seen colds and fevers, coughs and even headaches, but pink eyes were less common.
She could be a little confused considering we’re in allergy season right now and there are other common cold viruses that can cause conjunctivitis.
“So if you’re not protected by vaccines or boosters, go ahead and get them.
