Parents should be aware of the rare but potentially serious health conditions of children associated with COVID-19.
The first two cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in a child known as MIS-C in South Carolina were confirmed by state health officials on Sunday. The announcement was made one day after officials reported that a Midland child under the age of five died at COVID-19.
According to the State Department of Health and Environment, one MIS-C-infected child is from Midland and the other is from Peedy. Both are under 10 years old.
What is MIS-C?
Researchers have discovered that MIS-C can develop in children and young adults up to 21 years of age between two and four weeks after being infected with COVID-19.
In MIS-C, the child’s immune system does not shut down after ousting COVID-19. Instead, it can cause dangerous inflammatory reactions in the heart and other organs.
“I think parents should be aware of this post-viral response,” said Dr. Robin Lacroix, a pediatric infectious disease specialist who is the medical director of Prisma Health Children’s Hospital Upstate.

This syndrome first appeared in London in late April. A New York doctor began reporting cases soon after. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requested doctors nationwide to begin monitoring the condition in mid-May. Since then, nine cases have been identified in Georgia and seven in Virginia since then.
Researchers in Boston and New York investigated nearly 300 cases of MIS-C, according to two articles published last month in the New England Journal of Medicine. About 80% of those children were caught in the intensive care unit, killing six.
“Most of the time, these children are fully recovered,” Lacroix said during a media briefing on Monday. She said children with MIS-C are usually hospitalized for 5 to 8 days.
What are the symptoms of MIS-C?
Lacroix said that children who get sick again with the following symptoms after recovering from an infection should consider seeing their parents:
heat
Persistent red eyes, red lips, red tongue
Swelling of limbs
rash
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting
Intense fatigue and weakness
How can parents protect their children from MIS-C?
Lacroix said the best means of prevention is to take steps to ensure that parents or other adults do not spread COVID-19 to their children. These steps include avoiding congestion, wearing a mask, and frequently washing your hands.
According to Lacroix, parents who can protect their children from acquiring a COVID are the first line of defense.
