MyMichigan Health’s Tammy Albrecht on Stroke Warning Signals

On average, someone in the US has a stroke every 40 seconds. May is National Stroke Awareness Month, making it a good time to learn what your risk of stroke looks like and how to recognize the warning signs of stroke.

Q. What is a stroke?

a. A stroke is a “brain attack” that occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or ruptures. This cuts off the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain and can cause brain cells to start dying. Stroke can lead to death or long-term disability, including partial paralysis and loss of memory, language, and other important abilities.

Q. What are the warning signs of stroke?

A. Remember the acronym “BE FAST”.

• Balance – Sudden loss of balance or coordination

• Eyes – Sudden vision loss or change in vision

• Face – uneven smile, weakness on one side of the face

• Arms – Sudden weakness in one arm or leg

• Speech – slurred or confused speech, difficulty speaking

• Time – dial 911 immediately

Q. What are the common risk factors for stroke?

A. Some factors that increase the risk of stroke are beyond your control, including age, gender, race, and family history. However, controllable risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels, heart disease, smoking and heavy drinking, diabetes, and lack of exercise. You can control these factors by working with your healthcare provider.

Q. Is there anything I should learn if I am at risk of stroke?

A. MyMichigan Health Foundation helped fund a new free online stroke assessment to help individuals identify their stroke risk. This tool is designed to assess long-term stroke risk based on both controllable and uncontrollable risk factors. Along with your personal risk overview report, this assessment also provides actionable things you can do to reduce your risk.To get evaluated, please visit www.mymichigan.org/stroke risk.

Q. What is the most common type of stroke?

A. There are two types of stroke. The majority (86%) of all strokes are believed to be ischemic and occur when blood vessels in the head become blocked. Hemorrhagic stroke is less common and occurs when one of the blood vessels ruptures and causes bleeding in the brain.

A transient ischemic attack, or TIA, or “mini-stroke,” is a warning sign that a stroke may occur. About 20% of untreated patients with a TIA develop a major stroke within a year. For this reason, it is important to diagnose stroke symptoms immediately.

Q. What treatments are available for people who have had a stroke?

a. Emergency treatment may include drugs to dissolve clots that are blocking blood flow to the brain and procedures using catheters to remove clots from blood vessels. This procedure, called thrombectomy, is now available at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland.

Many stroke patients are disabled as a result and may need specialized stroke rehabilitation to overcome its physical, mental and emotional effects.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
