First Case of Coronavirus Reported in a South Carolina Pet | Coronavirus
Shepherd mixed-breed dogs are the first pets in South Carolina to be confirmed to be infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 infection.
Clemson University News announced Thursday that a dog euthanized for other chronic health conditions was tested by a veterinarian for viruses after one of its owners contracted COVID-19.
A dog test was confirmed positive by the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratories on July 9, according to a news release.
Human COVID-19 is believed to have originated mainly from bats in the Wuhan wet market in China, but livestock is not currently believed to contribute to the spread of human disease.
“Based on our current knowledge, there is still no evidence that pets play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2 to people,” said Dr. Boydper, State Veterinarian of the Release and Director of Clemson Livestock and Poultry Health. .. “If you’re infected with COVID-19 to protect you from exposure to the CDC-recommended virus, it’s a good idea to limit your contact with pets and other animals, just like anyone else.” .”

The first case of the virus recorded in animals in the United States occurred at the Bronx Zoo in New York, where the Murray tiger tested positive.
