Rare genes can explain why some women don’t need pain relief at birth
Researchers at the University of Cambridge found that only about 1 in 100 women carry a mutation that reduces the ability of nerve cells to send pain signals to the brain.
The gene then functions as the natural epidural, which may explain why giving birth is a less painful experience for a few women.

“The sensitivity of this gatekeeper to electrical signals, which have the ability to open gates and turn on nerves, was reduced by a rare variant,” the researchers found.
“The genetic mutations found in women with less pain during childbirth lead to “deficiencies” in the formation of neuronal switch,” explained co-author Ewan St. John Smith. “In fact, this defect works like a natural epidural treatment.”
“It means a much bigger signal to turn it on, in other words, a stronger contraction during work,” said Smith, who holds a PhD from the Department of Pharmacology in Cambridge. “This reduces the chance that pain signals will reach the brain.”
“Not only did we identify the genetic mutations in the new players that underlie different pain sensitivities,” added co-author Frank Lyman, who is a professor of endocrine signaling in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry in Cambridge. “But I hope this opens the way for new drugs to manage pain.”
